Team Canada has won the silver medal at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. On Sunday in the gold medal game, the Canadian team skipped by Canadian Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue of St. John’s, Newfoundland lost to Sweden’s Niklas Edin 6-5. It was the fifth medal in the history of the tournament for Gushue, as he has won one gold medal and four silver medals.
Gushue’s World Championship gold medal came in 2017 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. His silver medals came in 2018 and 2022 in Las Vegas in Nevada, and in 2023 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. When Gushue won his silver medals in 2018 and 2022, he also lost to Edin. In 2023, Gushue lost to Scotland’s Bruce Mouat. Gushue’s Olympic gold medal came at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin. He also won bronze at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
The bronze medalist at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship was Italy. The Italian skip Joel Retornaz had a marvelous World Curling Tour season as he won the Hearing Life Tour Challenge Tier 1 event in Niagara Falls, Ontario on October 22, the National in Pictou County, Nova Scotia on November 12, and the WFG Masters in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on December 17.
Edin meanwhile has won seven gold medals now at the World Men’s Curling Championships. Of his seven titles, four have come in Canada. He won in 2013 in Victoria, British Columbia, in 2015 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2019 in Lethbridge, Alberta, and in 2021 in Calgary, Alberta.
