Team Canada has won the gold medal at the 2024 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Utica, New York. On Sunday, Canada defeated the United States 6-5 in overtime.
The overtime winner was scored by Danielle Serdachny of Edmonton, Alberta. Serdachny scored from Canadian Olympic gold medalists Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario and Ann-Renee Desbiens of La Malbaie, Quebec. Ambrose, a defenseman, and Desbiens, a goaltender, won the gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
Two Canadians registered a multi-point game. They were Ambrose, who had one goal and one assist for two points, and three-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec, who had two goals and was the gold medal game most valuable player. Poulin won the gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, and the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. The other two Canadian goal scorers were Canadian Olympic gold medalist Emily Clark of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Julia Gosling of London, Ontario. Clark won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
This was Canada’s 13th gold medal all-time. It was the fifth time Canada beat the United States in the gold medal in overtime at the Women’s World Hockey Championship. They previously won 4-3 in 1997 in Kitchener, Ontario (OT winner scored by Nancy Drolet of Drummondville, Quebec), 3-2 in 2000 in Mississauga, Ontario (OT winner scored by Drolet again), 5-4 in 2012 in Burlington, Vermont (OT winner scored by Canadian Olympic gold medalist Caroline Ouellette of Montreal, Quebec), and 3-2 in 2021 in Calgary, Alberta (OT winner scored by Poulin). Ouellette’s gold medals came at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
