Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sidney Crosby of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia made National Hockey League history on Thursday. He became the 14th player to record 1000 National Hockey League assists for his career.
Crosby accomplished the feat in a 6-5 Pittsburgh Penguins win over the Detroit Red Wings. The historic assist came on the Penguins’s overtime winner as Crosby helped set up Erik Karlsson at 1:40 of the extra period. It was Crosby’s second assist of the game as he previously set up Drew O’Connor.
Crosby won a gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The previous 13 players with 1000 assists are Wayne Gretzky of Brantford, Ontario (1963), Ron Francis of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (1249), Mark Messier of Edmonton, Alberta (1193), Ray Bourque of Montreal, Quebec (1169), Jaromir Jagr (1155), Paul Coffey of Weston, Ontario (1135), Joe Thornton of London, Ontario (1109), Adam Oates of Weston (1079), Steve Yzerman of Cranbrook, British Columbia (1063), Gordie Howe of Floral, Saskatchewan (1049), Marcel Dionne of Drummondville, Quebec (1040), Mario Lemieux of Montreal (1033), and Joe Sakic of Burnaby, British Columbia (1016).
Meanwhile, Crosby moved into 10th place all-time in NHL points with 1591. With the win, the Penguins moved into eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 86 points. They have a record of 37 wins, 20 regulation losses, and 12 losses in extra time, and lead the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers by a single point for the final playoff spot.
