Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario recorded the world’s fastest women’s 200 metre freestyle swim time in 2024 on Wednesday. She posted a winning time of 1:54.21 in winning the 2024 Canadian Swimming Open at the Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto.
Mary-Sophie Harvey of Laval, Quebec won the silver medal with a time of 1:58.81. Ella Jansen of Burlington, Ontario won the bronze medal with a time of 1:59.72. McIntosh reached the podium by 1.76 seconds. Emma O’Croinin of Edmonton, Alberta finished in fourth place with a time of 2:00.23.
McIntosh broke the previous fastest time in 2024 of Erika Fairweather of New Zealand. Fairweather had a time of 1:55.45 in winning the New Zealand Olympic Trials earlier in the day on Wednesday.
McIntosh’s time of 1:54.21 would also have been good enough to win the gold medal in the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong won the gold medal with a time of 1:54.89. Haughey had the fastest time in the fall as she posted a time of 1:54.08 at a World Cup in Budapest, Hungary on October 21, 2023.
McIntosh’s fastest time in the women’s 200 metre freestyle was 1:53.65. The time was set at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan when she won bronze. Mollie O’Callaghan of Australia won the gold medal in Japan and set the world record with a time of 1:52.85. The gold medal in Toronto for McIntosh will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
