Four local companies will square off in the ultimate backyard build-off at the 2024 Edmonton Home and Garden Show, running March 21 to 24 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. It’s the return of Backyard Wars, a show feature in which attendees vote for their favourite backyard display while digging up a few ideas for their own.

This year’s contestants are Mohr’s Landscaping Services, HML Landscape Design and Construction, Classy Landscaping and Salisbury Landscaping. Each Edmonton area company will create a small-scale backyard in an attempt to out-design and out-build their fellow contestants while garnering support from show goers.

Mohr’s, lead by company owner Brian Mohr, received the most votes last year and it hopes to remain victorious in 2024. The focal point for this year’s backyard will be a patio surrounded by plantings that show attendees will be able to use and enjoy, rather than admire from afar.

“We’re creating an oasis for people to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the show,” says Mohr.

The display will also include an impressive eight-foot waterfall, the type of feature he believes is a must-have in any yard considering Edmonton’s limited hot weather.

“Our summers are so short. A water feature is a way of making the most of it. The atmosphere and the sound they provide, well, nothing compares to it,” he says.

HML returns for another backyard battle. Owner Casey Beckhuson says the competition is always tough, so they’re also arming themselves with a creative water feature.

“Water always draws a crowd over to our display,” he says. The HML team will add a wooden structure like a pergola and outdoor lighting, a feature that more customers are demanding every year.

“People want the whole yard lit up, beyond the patio and the deck. It makes the yard feel cozy, even if you’re inside the house looking out at it,” Beckhuson says.

Sherwood Park’s Salisbury Landscaping is a new competitor eager to showcase their professional landscape design and build services. Marketing manager Eddie Chan says one of the company’s strengths is their design team who are planning an ultra-modern garden layout for Backyard Wars.

“It will be contemporary and a bit more modern than what people have seen at home shows in the past. Our theme is going to be working from home. A lot of people working from home don’t want to sit inside, they want to sit outside especially in the summertime,” he says.

Each of the four exhibitors will battle it out for their choice of a $1,000 cash prize or free booth space at the 2025 Home and Garden Show. Details on how to vote for the best yard are posted beside the Backyard Wars feature at the show.
