A major pile-up has brought traffic to a standstill on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Cochrane RCMP report that the wreck is in the westbound lanes of Highway 1 at Highway 40, near Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

According to EMS, two people were taken to the hospital, though their injuries are not life-threatening.

Highway conditions west of Calgary have been treacherous throughout the day, with heavy snow, strong winds, and low visibility.

RCMP recommends that drivers stay off the roads and at home if possible until the weather improves or choose an alternate route.

The southbound lanes on the QE-2 Highway at Carstairs have also been shut down due to a major crash.
