Edmonton city council has appointed a new city auditor after a year-long search to fill the position.
Long-time city employee Janine Mryglod has been promoted to the new role, a news release from the mayor’s office announced Wednesday. Mryglod, who has worked in the audit department for more than 17 years, stepped into the acting auditor role last May. Former city auditor Hoa Quach’s resignation was made public April 14, 2023.

“Janine has demonstrated her outstanding commitment to Edmontonians throughout her role as acting city auditor, and I am grateful she will continue in this role permanently,” Mayor Amarjeet Sohi said in a statement. “The city auditor provides important advice to help council make the best decisions for the organization. I look forward to continuing to work with her.”
The city auditor is one of two municipal employees hired by and directly accountable to Edmonton city council — the city manager is the other. The auditor is responsible for auditing municipal departments, providing advice and investigating matters on behalf of city council.
Some recent reports released by the auditor’s office include an audit of the Blatchford redevelopment department, the 311 system, and the city’s efforts to tackle climate change.
This year, the auditor’s department plans to investigate and assess the decision-making around affordable and supportive housing funding, the emergency response team, paratransit or DATS service, governance around the city’s aging tax assessment system, facility maintenance, the Ariba procurement website, and the city’s overall fraud risk management program.
Mryglod has worked as an audit co-ordinator, senior audit co-ordinator, and deputy city auditor. She is also the president of the Edmonton Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
