Another day means there’s another Wordle puzzle for players to solveā€”and Newsweek is here to help if you need it.

New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle created the game as a way to entertain his partner during the coronavirus lockdown. The couple shared a love of crossword puzzles, so he developed Wordle as a way for them to spend quality time together.

It was released to the public in October 2021 and following this, Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. The New York Times purchased the game for an undisclosed seven-figure fee soon after.

Each day, players try to guess a new, five-letter word and have six attempts to do so. Within these six guesses, you use a designated color system to find out which letters are present in that day’s chosen word.

If a Wordle user guesses a letter that’s in the right place, that tile will turn green. If the letter appears in the word, but not in the place the user has guessed it, it will turn yellow. If the letter does not appear in the word at all, the tile will turn gray.

Speaking to Newsweek in January 2022, Wardle explained why he decided on five-letter words for the game.

“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it. That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed,” he said.

“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”
