Cincinnati native Rose Lavelle logged her second scoring contribution of the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup in extra time as the United States defeated Canada in penalty kicks to advance to the tournament final.Lavelle’s assist came in the 99th minute to break a 1-1 tie in extra time. Emily Sonnett sent the ball into the attacking third from the midfield circle, where it found Lavelle who headed the ball forward to Sophia Smith.Once with possession, Smith beat Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan with a strike to the left post, giving the U.S. a 2-1 lead.The lead didn’t last, however, as Canada netted an extra time equalizer in the form of of an Adriana Leon penalty kick in added time to the final extra time frame.The match went into penalty kicks, where the USWNT prevailed, netting three of their four shots with Smith, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and captain Lindsey Horan finding the back of the goal.Only one of Canada’s four shots got past Naeher.Despite being out-possessed 53%-47%, the Americans out-shot Canada, 9-6, and drew more corner kicks, 6-4.Wednesday night’s victory propels the USWNT to the first ever final of the W Gold Cup, where they’ll take on Brazil, who defeated Mexico 3-0 in their semifinal match, Sunday night.The U.S. have won the their last five matches against the South American nation and have defeated Brazil in a tournament final twice, beating them for Olympic gold in 2004 and 2008.Kickoff for the W Gold Cup final is set for 8:15 p.m. in San Diego.
