Finding out whether you’re having a girl or a boy is one of the most exciting moments of a pregnancy—and many expectant parents like to celebrate with a gender reveal party. But as one mom found out, getting to eat cake can be even better than knowing if you’re having a daughter or a son.
One mom called Bekah, who posts on TikTok under the name BekandJonnyLand, shared a video of her husband forgetting all about the gender reveal as soon as the cake was brought out. The couple dig into the cake to find out whether the sponge is pink or blue, but he is so busy eating that he forgets to look. While the mom is delighted to find out they’re having a daughter, he’s enjoying the frosting.
Commenters have been thoroughly enjoying how excited the dad gets over cake. One wrote: “He saw cake and completely forgot about the gender reveal part.”
Another added: “Awe you look so confused like, ‘what the hell did he notice, did he forget??'”
Someone else wrote: “He’s like, I’ve been staring at this cake all day, just let me eat it.”
Though many people say they’d want to know their child’s gender before they were born, Americans have mixed feelings about gender reveal parties, where parents-to-be find out if they’re having a boy or a girl.
More than one-third (35 percent) of Americans say these parties are unnecessary, 30 percent say they’re trendy, 28 percent say they’re silly, and another 28% say they’re a fad, according to data from YouGov Omnibus.
According to a separate U.K. survey, more than half of the UK public would not have a gender reveal, with 46.5 percent of the public believing that gender reveals are silly. A further 19 percent said they would rather find out their baby’s sex privately.
Though they might think a party to celebrate the baby’s gender is unnecessary, more than half (58 percent) of people say that they would be interested in learning their baby’s gender before it was born.
While most gender reveal parties are about celebrating with family, friends and cake, some have taken a deadly turn. In 2020, a couple in El Dorado, California, revealed their baby’s sex by setting off a smoke-generating device, revealing blue smoke. It was a hot, dry, windy day and the smoke device started a huge wildfire, scorching 32 square miles. The couple were charged with 30 crimes, including involuntary manslaughter.
Luckily, the majority of gender reveal parties aren’t as disastrous.
