A restful dog is quite a rare sight, since the slightest movement or sound can jolt them awake. But when they do find a comfy spot and get themselves into a much-needed deep sleep, it’s beyond adorable.
Sometimes dogs will twitch or move their legs while sleeping, which is a telltale sign that a dog is dreaming. However, dogs typically only go into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep about 10 percent of the 12 hours of sleep they should be aiming toward. One would think that it is such a short amount of time to dream, but not for dogs.
A golden retriever who is known on TikTok as @golden_maylo was clearly in a deep slumber. His tail was wagging and he let out little huffs. Must’ve been a juicy dream and now, the clip of him dreaming has people totally invested in his “fight.”
The caption reads: “Got in some fight while sleeping.”
All those little huffs throughout the video made it seem like a very serious dream. He was probably fighting away all the bad and protecting his family. He wasn’t going to get up until all was safe. And most people wouldn’t mind if he continued to dream. It’s beyond adorable!
The January 24 TikTok had reached nearly 3 million views, 794,500 likes and 1,935 comments as of Wednesday. Guesses on what the dog was dreaming flooded the comment section.
“Aww, looks he’s having one of those ‘I saved the day’ moments in his dreams,” pointed out a viewer.
The TikTok creator responded by saying: “Exactly! He probably was super proud when he woke up.” As he should be!
Another guess reads: “Running after a squirrel.”
Newsweek reached out to @golden_maylo via TikTok for additional information.
But the golden question remains: What do dogs dream about if they do dream? The American Kennel Club stated in an article that scientists believe most vertebrates can and do dream regularly, even something as tiny as a fruit fly. Like humans, dogs have a similar sleep pattern between REM sleep and wakefulness.
The article continued to state that small dog breeds typically have more frequent dreams, but those dreams are shorter in duration. There is no way to know for certain what your dog dreams about. But dogs dreaming similarly to humans means they aren’t so different from people after all!
