The remains found in a landfill site near Winnipeg, have been confirmed as those of Marcedes Myran, a 26-year-old Indigenous woman who was murdered around May 4, 2022.
The remains were found as part of a humanitarian search of the Prairie Green Landfill, located about 20 miles northwest of Winnipeg.
Jeremy Anthony Michael Skibicki, a convicted serial killer, has been linked to multiple deaths in the Winnipeg area. Skibicki was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on December 1, 2022. He was found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in July 2024 and was ordered to serve four life sentences without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
Native women are murdered at alarming rates, with the second highest rate of homicide in 2020 for non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native females.
Red dresses are often placed in outdoor spaces to represent missing and murdered Indigenous women, and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs has expressed their commitment to returning Myran to her family.
The organization stands by the families of Indigenous women who have been taken too soon and will continue to honor the memory of Myran, Harris, Contois, and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe.
